How long does nail surgery take to work for a bruised nail?

A bruised nail, or subungual haematoma, is blood trapped beneath the nail, often after an impact or crushing injury. When pressure is present, a clinician may drain the trapped blood or treat the nail and underlying injury. Relief can be noticeable once pressure is released, but the existing dark mark does not vanish because it is within or beneath the nail.

The nail may remain tender, loose, or discoloured while the injury heals. The final appearance depends on whether the nail bed or growth area was damaged, so a clinician may assess more than the bruise itself.

Keep the dressing in place for the advised period and protect the finger or toe from another impact. Elevate it when swollen, use only pain relief recommended for you, and choose roomy footwear for a treated toe. Avoid puncturing the nail yourself. Keep follow-up appointments if the injury was severe or the nail was repaired.

Get medical advice if pain is increasing, the finger or toe becomes numb, crooked, pale, or cold, or swelling makes movement difficult. Redness that spreads, pus, fever, or red streaks can indicate infection. A bruise without a clear injury, or pigment that does not move with nail growth, also warrants dermatology review.

Ask whether the nail needs drainage, removal, or imaging; how to protect any nail-bed repair; and which changes are expected as the bruise grows out. Confirm when you can return to sports, manual work, and normal nail care.
