How long does nail surgery take to work for nail separation?

Nail separation, also called onycholysis, occurs when the nail plate lifts away from the skin beneath it. Surgery may remove a loose portion, treat tissue beneath the nail, or help investigate a cause. The detached section cannot be glued back into place. As the nail grows, the new portion may sit closer to the nail bed if the cause has been addressed.

Recovery depends on the affected nail, the extent of lifting, trauma or inflammation, and whether an infection or another trigger needs treatment. Ongoing moisture, chemicals, pressure, or picking can keep the nail lifted.

Keep the treated area covered exactly as advised and avoid forcing the nail down. Keep hands or feet dry when possible, wear roomy shoes, and use gloves for wet or chemical work. Trim only loose edges when your clinician says it is safe. Do not place adhesive, artificial nails, or polish over the healing area.

Seek advice if redness spreads, swelling increases, pain becomes severe, or drainage develops. Fever or red streaks need prompt assessment. Contact your dermatologist if separation progresses, the nail turns green or very dark, or several nails begin lifting, since the cause may need a fresh examination.
