How long does nail surgery take to work for nail fungus?

Fungal nail infection can thicken, crumble, or separate part of the nail. Surgery may reduce diseased nail material or provide access for another treatment, but it does not necessarily remove infection from the nail bed or surrounding skin. A new nail has to grow forward before you can see how well the nail is recovering.

The pace varies with the affected finger or toe, the extent of damage, circulation, and the plan chosen by your clinician. A nail that looks abnormal soon after surgery may be healing rather than showing treatment failure.

Keep the dressing and wound clean and dry as instructed. Wear footwear that does not press on a treated toe, and avoid sharing nail tools or towels. Use prescribed antifungal medicine for the full advised course if it is part of your plan. Do not trim, scrape, or polish the healing nail without checking with the clinic.

Call the clinic if pain, warmth, redness, or swelling increases, or if pus-like drainage appears. Prompt care is needed for fever, red streaking, or rapidly worsening discomfort. Arrange reassessment if the nail continues to crumble, new nails become involved, or the diagnosis has not been confirmed, because several nail conditions can resemble fungus.

Ask whether surgery is being used to remove damaged nail, obtain a sample, or improve medicine delivery. Clarify whether testing is needed, how long the dressing stays on, which antifungal treatment is planned, and what signs will show that the infection is settling.
