How long does a myomectomy take to work for uterine fibroids?

A myomectomy removes fibroids while preserving the uterus. The approach may be through small abdominal cuts, a larger abdominal incision or the vagina and cervix, depending on fibroid position, size and number. That choice affects soreness, activity restrictions and the pace of recovery.

Pressure symptoms may ease as healing progresses, while heavy menstrual bleeding can take time to settle as the next cycles occur. Fertility plans need individual guidance because the uterus requires healing before pregnancy is considered. Removing existing fibroids does not prevent new fibroids from developing later.

Take pain relief as prescribed, keep incisions clean and attend your postoperative review. Walk gently as advised, but avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity until your surgeon gives permission. Track bleeding, pain, fever and bladder or bowel changes. Ask specifically when vaginal intercourse, work and pregnancy planning can resume.

Contact your surgical team for fever, worsening pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, persistent vomiting, wound redness or fluid leakage. Seek urgent care for fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain or sudden severe abdominal pain. New or worsening symptoms after discharge should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask which symptoms should improve first, how the surgical approach changes recovery, when the uterus will be ready for pregnancy, and whether imaging or another review is planned. Ask how to recognise bleeding that is outside your expected recovery pattern.
