How long does mid-urethral sling take to work for stress urinary incontinence?

A mid-urethral sling may reduce stress-related urine leakage soon after surgery, but healing and bladder symptoms can take several weeks to settle. The sling supports the urethra when pressure rises from coughing, sneezing, lifting or exercise. Early urgency, frequency, stinging or a changed urine stream can occur while nearby tissues recover, so the first days do not always show the final result.

Temporary pelvic discomfort, light bleeding and a need to urinate more often may follow the procedure. Some people empty their bladder normally before leaving; others need a short period of bladder drainage or a further check of emptying. A small amount of leakage with a strong urge to urinate is different from leakage caused by coughing and may need separate treatment. Improvement in stress leakage does not necessarily remove every type of urinary symptom.

Follow the discharge instructions about activity, wound care, medicines and bathing. Avoid straining and heavy lifting until your surgical team says it is appropriate, and increase walking gently as comfort allows. Keep track of leakage, urgency, pain and how easily you pass urine; this makes the follow-up visit more useful. Do not judge the result after one difficult day, but contact the operating team if symptoms are worsening rather than gradually easing.

Seek prompt medical advice if you cannot pass urine, have severe or increasing pain, develop fever, notice heavy bleeding, or have foul-smelling discharge. Contact your clinician for burning urine, new difficulty emptying your bladder, worsening urgency, or leakage that remains troublesome after the planned recovery review. Sudden chest pain, shortness of breath or a painful swollen leg needs urgent assessment.

Ask when your surgeon expects you to resume work, exercise and sexual activity, how bladder emptying will be checked, and which symptoms should trigger a call. You can also ask how stress leakage will be distinguished from urgency leakage and when persistent symptoms should be reviewed.
