How long does microdiscectomy take to work for cauda equina syndrome?

A microdiscectomy removes a small amount of disc material that is pressing on spinal nerves. Relieving pressure may stop further injury and may improve leg pain quickly, while numbness, weakness and bladder, bowel or sexual function can recover more slowly or incompletely. The timing of decompression, the degree of nerve injury and your condition before surgery all influence recovery. Surgery is only one part of care; neurological checks and rehabilitation help track what returns.

Follow the spine team’s wound, lifting, walking and medication instructions. Increase walking in short, manageable amounts and attend follow-up appointments even if leg pain improves. Report changes in bladder emptying, bowel control, saddle sensation or leg strength immediately. Do not wait for routine physiotherapy if these functions worsen. A therapist can later tailor rehabilitation for walking, trunk control, strength and safe daily activity.

Cauda equina symptoms are an emergency. Seek emergency care immediately for new difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, or worsening weakness in one or both legs. After surgery, urgent assessment is also needed for a new decline in these functions, severe wound problems, fever or rapidly increasing pain.
