How long does metformin for PCOS take to work for anovulation?

Anovulation means the ovary does not release an egg during a cycle. In PCOS, altered insulin handling can contribute to hormone changes and irregular ovulation. Metformin improves the body’s response to insulin, which may help hormone patterns become more favourable for ovulation over time.

The first sign may be more predictable bleeding, although a bleed does not always prove that ovulation occurred. Your clinician may use cycle history, ovulation testing, blood tests or ultrasound to assess the response. Metformin is often one part of care, rather than a stand-alone fertility treatment.

Take metformin exactly as prescribed and do not change the dose because a cycle remains irregular. Taking it with food may make stomach upset easier to manage. Record bleeding, possible ovulation signs and side effects, and attend the review arranged by your clinician. If pregnancy is possible, ask how to continue or adjust treatment.

Contact your prescriber about persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to keep fluids down, worsening weakness, or side effects that prevent you taking the medicine. Seek prompt advice for severe abdominal symptoms or suspected pregnancy with pain or bleeding. A lack of ovulation after the planned review also deserves reassessment, since another treatment may be needed.
