How long does a mental health assessment take to work for insomnia?

Short answer
A mental health assessment does not treat insomnia immediately; it usually begins by clarifying causes and planning care, while improvement depends on the treatment chosen and how consistently it is followed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the assessment can do
The clinician may ask about your sleep pattern, worries, mood, medicines, caffeine, daily routine and how tiredness affects you. This helps separate difficulty falling asleep from waking repeatedly or waking too early, and may reveal anxiety, low mood, stress, pain or another sleep problem. The appointment itself can provide direction, but the benefit comes from the next steps, such as behavioural sleep strategies, talking therapy or treatment of a contributing condition.
How to make the plan useful
Before the appointment, note your usual bedtime, wake time, awakenings and naps for several days. Bring a list of medicines, supplements and substances that may affect sleep. Follow the agreed routine consistently and record changes rather than judging one difficult night. Avoid changing prescribed treatment without advice. If sleep remains poor, tell the clinician whether the main problem is sleep onset, night waking, early waking or daytime exhaustion so the plan can be adjusted.
When to seek care promptly
Arrange prompt medical help if sleeplessness comes with thoughts of self-harm, severe confusion, feeling unable to stay safe, or unusually high energy with very little need for sleep. Seek urgent care for breathing pauses, chest pain or a sudden severe change in mental state. Otherwise, book a review when insomnia is persistent, is affecting driving or work, or continues despite following the agreed plan.
Questions to take along
Ask what might be maintaining your insomnia, which improvement to watch for first, when the plan should be reviewed, and whether another health problem or medicine could be disturbing sleep. You can also ask what to do after a poor night and which warning signs should prompt earlier contact.
