How Long Does Mastectomy Take to Work for Paget Disease of the Breast?

Paget disease affects the nipple and areola and can occur with a separate area of disease deeper in the breast. The operation selected for you depends on the breast findings, imaging, biopsy information and the extent of tissue involved. A mastectomy removes the breast tissue planned by the surgeon; lymph nodes may also be assessed when appropriate.

The removed tissue is examined in a laboratory. That report can clarify the extent and features of the disease and help determine whether another treatment is recommended. Surgical soreness, swelling and altered sensation are expected parts of recovery for some people, but they do not measure cancer control.

Follow the dressing and drain instructions, use pain relief as prescribed and increase arm activity gradually. Keep the appointment where the pathology findings and next steps are explained. If reconstruction or a prosthesis is relevant to you, ask when that discussion should happen.

Before leaving hospital, check how to contact the breast or surgical team, how to support the arm and when bathing is allowed. Bring a list of medicines to follow-up visits so changes can be checked safely.

Get prompt advice if the incision becomes more red, warm, swollen or painful, if drainage changes, or if the wound separates. Seek urgent care for severe bleeding, sudden breathlessness, chest pain or fainting. A fever or rapidly worsening illness after surgery should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether disease was found beyond the nipple area, what the pathology report will cover, and whether lymph nodes need assessment. Ask when results will be ready, whether further treatment is planned, and how to manage sensation, wound care and arm movement.
