How long does mastectomy take to work for breast cancer?

The operation addresses the breast tissue selected by the surgical plan; it is not a medicine that gradually starts working. The wound, chest wall, and any reconstruction need time to heal. Temporary tightness, numbness, bruising, drain use, and limited arm movement can occur.

The surgical team sends removed tissue for pathology. That report can describe the cancer and whether nearby tissue or lymph nodes need further consideration. Your oncology team uses this information with scans and other results to decide whether more treatment is advised.

Follow wound and drain instructions, take prescribed medicines as directed, and perform only the arm exercises recommended for your stage of healing. Keep the surgical and oncology appointments, wear any advised support garment, and ask before lifting, driving, or returning to work.

Call the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, wound separation, pus, fever, uncontrolled pain, or a drain that suddenly changes. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or one-sided leg swelling needs urgent medical assessment.

Ask when the pathology report is expected, which activities are safe at each stage, and how reconstruction or a prosthesis affects recovery. Ask whether lymph node surgery, radiotherapy, or medicines may be recommended after the operation.
