Paget disease affects the nipple or areola and may occur with another area of breast disease. The surgeon removes the planned tissue, while the laboratory examines the specimen and its margins. Those findings, together with imaging and examination, show whether the operation achieved the intended local removal and whether another treatment should be considered. Nipple sensitivity, bruising, swelling, or altered appearance can persist while the skin and deeper tissues repair. Feeling better is encouraging for recovery but does not replace the pathology review.

Keep the dressing and incision clean as instructed, take medicines according to the discharge plan, and perform only the recommended arm movements. Attend review visits for wound assessment and the pathology discussion. Ask whether the nipple and areola need specific dressing care, when imaging should be repeated, and whether radiotherapy or other treatment is part of your plan. Protect the area from friction and report changes rather than waiting for the next routine appointment.

Seek prompt advice for spreading redness, warmth, discharge, wound opening, fever, worsening pain, or swelling that appears quickly. Get emergency help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, fainting, or bleeding that will not stop with pressure. These signs require clinical assessment and are not a test of whether Paget disease has been treated.
