How long does laser hair removal take to work for razor bumps?

Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, happen when shaved hairs curve back into the skin and trigger inflammation. Laser treatment targets pigment in growing hair follicles, so one session cannot affect every hair at the same stage. Existing bumps may settle as the skin calms, but newly treated hairs shed on their own schedule. Hair colour, thickness, skin tone, treatment settings, and the area being treated all influence the response. A new bump can still appear between sessions if a hair is cut or becomes trapped.

Follow the clinic’s appointment schedule and avoid plucking or waxing between sessions, because the follicle needs to contain a hair for the laser to target it. If shaving is allowed, use a clean razor, light pressure, and a fragrance-free moisturiser afterwards. Do not pick at bumps; this can deepen inflammation and leave dark marks. Tell the clinician about recent tanning, medicines, a history of keloid scars, or changes in the treated skin before the next session. Ask whether your skin needs a test spot and which aftercare products are suitable.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, swelling, blistering, crusting, or pain is worsening rather than settling, or if the skin becomes markedly lighter or darker. Seek prompt medical advice for spreading warmth, pus, fever, or severe tenderness, which may indicate infection or a stronger reaction. Persistent bumps despite reducing hair growth may need a review for folliculitis, scarring, or another cause.
