How long does kyphoplasty take to work for a vertebral compression fracture?

During kyphoplasty, a clinician places material inside a collapsed vertebra to help stabilize it. Pain caused by movement at the fracture may settle quickly, but soreness from the procedure can briefly overlap with the original pain.

Pain relief is not the same as complete bone recovery. A compression fracture may still need protection, gradual movement and assessment of bone strength. If several vertebrae are affected, or if nerve irritation is present, recovery may be less predictable.

Follow the discharge instructions about walking, lifting, bending and wound care. Short, gentle walks are often increased gradually, while heavy lifting and forceful spinal movements should wait until your treating team gives permission. Take prescribed medicines as directed and attend follow-up so pain, movement and the treated level can be reviewed.

Ask whether you need a plan to reduce future fracture risk, such as bone-health assessment, safe strengthening or treatment for low bone density. Do not use improving pain as permission to return suddenly to strenuous activity.

Call the treating team for worsening back pain, fever, increasing redness or drainage at the wound, or new difficulty walking. Seek urgent care for new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe chest symptoms or sudden shortness of breath.

Ask when you may shower, drive, lift, bend and return to work. Clarify which pain is expected after treatment, how the fracture will be monitored, and what plan will protect the rest of your spine.
