How long does knee bracing take to work for knee osteoarthritis?

Short answer
A knee brace can change comfort during the first uses for knee osteoarthritis, but its overall benefit is judged over a short trial while fit, activity and symptoms are monitored.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How bracing may help
Depending on its design, a brace may support the knee, guide movement or shift some load away from a painful area. It does not reverse cartilage changes. Relief may be more noticeable during standing, walking or stairs and less apparent when the knee is resting.
A brace that is too tight can worsen discomfort, leave marks or cause tingling. One that moves during walking may provide little useful support. Symptoms also vary with activity, swelling, footwear and muscle conditioning, so one difficult day does not settle whether the brace is helpful.
Making a brace trial useful
Ask a clinician to select and fit the brace, then begin with the wearing schedule provided. Notice pain, confidence, skin comfort and walking ability during ordinary tasks. Pair bracing with suitable strengthening, mobility work and pacing rather than increasing activity simply because the knee feels supported.
Clean and store the brace as instructed. Report slipping, pressure points, numbness or increased swelling so the fit can be changed. Keep a simple symptom note to help your clinician decide whether to continue, adjust or replace the brace.
When to seek medical advice
Seek review if pain suddenly changes, the knee becomes hot and markedly swollen, it locks, you cannot bear weight, or the brace causes persistent numbness or skin injury. Urgent care is appropriate for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, or a cold and pale foot.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the brace should target a particular knee compartment, how long to trial it, which activities to test, and what other measures can protect movement while symptoms settle.

Questions people ask
Can a brace cure knee osteoarthritis?
A brace may reduce symptoms during activity, but it does not restore damaged cartilage or remove the underlying joint changes.
Why does the brace hurt?
Poor fit, excessive pressure, rubbing or a different source of knee pain can make a brace uncomfortable and should be assessed.
