How long does knee arthroscopy take to work for plica syndrome?

Arthroscopy uses small instruments to inspect the knee and, when appropriate, remove or smooth an irritated plica. Pain and swelling can temporarily make the knee feel worse immediately afterward. Early progress is often measured by easier bending, less catching and safer walking rather than by a single day when the procedure suddenly works.

The pace depends on how irritated the plica was, whether other knee problems were found, and how the joint responds. Physiotherapy can address swelling, restore range of motion and rebuild the thigh muscles that support the kneecap.

Follow the surgeon’s instructions for wound care, weight-bearing, prescribed exercises and pain relief. Use cold therapy and elevation only as advised, and increase activity in small steps. Do not force a deep bend or return to running while swelling, limping or sharp catching persists.

Keep follow-up appointments so movement, swelling and strength can be checked. A gradual home exercise plan is usually more useful than testing the knee with a demanding activity.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness or drainage at an incision, fever, worsening pain, marked calf swelling, new shortness of breath, or a foot that becomes unusually cold, pale or numb. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty or chest pain.

Ask which finding was treated, how much weight you may place through the leg, which exercises should start first, and what signs show that your recovery is progressing as expected.
