How long does joint fusion surgery take to work for thumb arthritis?

Fusion joins the painful joint so it no longer moves in the same way. A splint or cast protects the area while the bones heal. Swelling, stiffness in nearby joints, and reduced grip are expected during this phase; they do not by themselves show that the operation has failed. The final timeline depends on which thumb joint was fused, bone healing, your general health, and the procedure chosen.

Pain can change before strength returns. You may find pinching, opening jars, or turning keys difficult while the hand is protected. The goal is a stable thumb with less painful movement, not normal motion through the fused joint.

Keep the dressing, cast, or splint dry and use it exactly as instructed. Elevate the hand when it is swollen, move the fingers that are free, and attend follow-up appointments so healing and the position of the fusion can be checked. Start exercises only when your surgeon or hand therapist permits them; pushing through pain or lifting too soon can strain the healing area.

Ask when driving, work, bathing, gripping, and weight-bearing through the hand can resume. A hand therapist can adapt tasks and later build motion in the non-fused joints and strength around the thumb.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening pain, increasing redness or warmth, drainage, fever, a cast that feels too tight, new numbness, pale or blue fingers, or swelling that does not improve with elevation. Seek urgent help if the hand becomes suddenly cold, severely discoloured, or unusable. A fall or new impact on the protected thumb also warrants advice.
