How long does joint fusion surgery take to work for hallux rigidus?

Short answer

Big toe fusion improves hallux rigidus gradually as the wound heals, swelling settles, and the bone union becomes secure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What fusion changes

Hallux rigidus causes painful stiffness at the big toe joint. Fusion removes the painful joint movement by joining the bones in a planned position. The toe and foot can be sore and swollen at first, and shoe comfort may take longer than wound healing. Walking is usually progressed according to the surgeon’s instructions, with protection while the fusion heals. The big toe will not bend through the fused joint, but the aim is to make push-off more comfortable and stable.

Your recovery plan

Keep the foot elevated when advised and use the postoperative shoe, boot, or crutches exactly as directed. Protect the incision from moisture until cleared, and check the toes for increasing swelling or colour change. Do not force the toe to bend; later exercises focus on the ankle, other toes, calf, and walking pattern. Choose footwear only when the surgical team says the wound and fusion can tolerate it. Keep scheduled checks and imaging.

When to call the team

Seek prompt advice for worsening redness, drainage, fever, opening of the incision, or pain that is not controlled as expected. Urgent help is needed for severe calf swelling, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or a toe that becomes cold, blue, or persistently numb. Tell the team about a fall, a knock to the foot, or accidental loading during the protected phase.

What to ask

Ask how the big toe should be protected, when you may bear weight, and what scan or examination will show healing. Clarify when you can drive, work, exercise, and wear wider shoes, and whether swelling or altered push-off could affect your walking while recovery continues.

Questions people ask

Will the big toe bend normally after fusion?

No. The fused joint is intentionally stiff, although its stable position can make walking and push-off more comfortable.

Why is footwear still difficult after the wound heals?

Residual swelling and the need for a roomy toe box can outlast skin healing, so shoe changes should follow clinical advice.
