How long does joint aspiration take to work for septic arthritis?

Aspiration removes some infected fluid and lets clinicians test it for bacteria. Pain, swelling, and movement may begin to improve after fluid is removed, but the response varies with the joint, the amount of infection, and how promptly antibiotics begin. Drainage does not by itself clear bacteria from the joint. The fluid results can help the medical team adjust treatment.

Septic arthritis needs urgent assessment, usually in a hospital or specialist setting. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and keep the joint positioned as advised. Rest it during the painful phase, then follow the recommended movement or physiotherapy plan as inflammation settles. Do not squeeze, massage, or repeatedly load the joint without medical guidance. Keep follow-up appointments so pain, movement, blood tests, and fluid findings can be reviewed.

Seek urgent medical care for a hot, swollen, very painful joint, especially with fever, chills, feeling faint, or difficulty moving the limb. After aspiration, contact the treating team promptly if pain or swelling is worsening, the puncture site becomes increasingly red or draining, or fever returns. Rapid deterioration can require repeat drainage, intravenous antibiotics, or an operation.

Ask which joint fluid results are available, how long antibiotics are expected to continue, and what improvement should be seen first. Clarify whether another aspiration or surgical washout might be needed, how much weight or movement is appropriate, and who to contact outside clinic hours.
