The olecranon bursa sits over the pointed back of the elbow. Repeated leaning, a blow, skin irritation, or infection can make it fill with fluid. Aspiration removes fluid from this space, so the prominent swelling may look smaller and bending may feel easier shortly afterward. The bursa lining can remain irritated, and the opening that allowed fluid to collect is still present; this means the swelling may return. Fluid testing can help distinguish infection from non-infectious inflammation when the examination is uncertain.

Avoid leaning on the elbow and protect it from knocks while the puncture site heals. Keep the dressing dry and follow instructions about compression, movement, and prescribed medicine. Use the arm gently within comfort, but pause activities that cause throbbing or renewed swelling. Do not squeeze the bursa or attempt another drainage yourself. If the lump comes back, tell the clinician whether it returned gradually or rapidly and whether the skin changed.
