How long does IV fluid therapy take to work for food poisoning?

Vomiting and diarrhoea can remove water and salts faster than you can replace them by drinking. IV fluid therapy delivers replacement through a vein and may ease dehydration-related dizziness, weakness, dry mouth, or reduced urination as the body responds.

The infusion supports hydration; it does not automatically stop vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or abdominal pain. The clinician may assess the food history, symptoms, examination findings, and need for further tests or treatment.

Take small frequent sips of an appropriate rehydration drink when the care team says you can drink. Avoid returning quickly to heavy meals or strenuous activity. Report the number of vomiting or diarrhoeal episodes, any blood, fever, and whether you are passing urine.

Use careful handwashing and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Seek advice if symptoms continue, because some causes need specific management and some people become dehydrated more easily.

Seek urgent care for fainting, confusion, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, marked weakness, or breathing difficulty. Prompt assessment is also needed for a vulnerable person with rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask how dehydrated you are, what fluid losses should be replaced, when you can resume drinking and eating, and which symptoms would mean you need reassessment. Ask whether medicines should be stopped or changed while vomiting or diarrhoea continues.
