How long does it take to get COVID?

The virus first enters the body through the nose or mouth and begins replicating in susceptible cells. The immune response then produces symptoms in some people. Fever, cough, fatigue, headache, joint pain, loss of smell or loss of taste can occur, while others notice very little.

The date of exposure is not always clear, particularly when contact happens in a household or busy indoor setting. A test can be negative before enough viral material is present for detection. A positive test or new symptoms should be considered alongside the timing and the test instructions.

Note the possible exposure date, monitor your temperature and general health, and test as directed by the kit or a clinician. If symptoms start, reduce close contact, improve ventilation and avoid sharing personal items. Rest, drink fluids and use medicines only as directed for you.
