How long does a steroid injection take to work for a skin cyst?

The medicine is injected into or around a selected inflamed cyst to calm the surrounding reaction. A less painful, less swollen lump suggests that inflammation is settling. The capsule and its contents can remain, so improvement does not always mean the cyst has been removed. A cyst that is infected, very tense, or repeatedly recurring may need a different approach, such as drainage or removal assessed by a clinician. Do not try to empty it yourself, since squeezing can worsen inflammation and introduce infection.

Follow the wound-care instructions given after the injection and keep hands away from the area. Avoid pressing, puncturing, or applying harsh creams unless advised. Check the site each day for a gradual reduction in tenderness and swelling. If the lump remains unchanged after the expected review period, or returns after settling, ask whether examination or planned removal is more appropriate.

Get medical advice quickly if the area becomes increasingly hot, red, swollen, or painful, or if pus, fever, or red streaking appears. Urgent assessment is warranted for rapidly spreading facial swelling or feeling very unwell. Tell the clinic about persistent skin thinning, a visible indentation, or a colour change at the injection site.
