How long does immunotherapy take to work for non-small cell lung cancer?

Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells. That process can develop gradually, so a change in how you feel is not the only way treatment is assessed. Non-small cell lung cancer includes different tumour types, and treatment may be selected using biopsy findings, stage, previous treatment and immune markers. A scan can show shrinkage, stability, or a change that needs further interpretation. In some situations, inflammation around treated areas can make an early scan harder to read. Your team may compare scans over time with breathing symptoms, pain, weight, energy and examination findings.

Attend each planned infusion and assessment unless your cancer team changes the schedule. Keep a simple record of cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, appetite, activity and new symptoms, including when they began. Do not stop treatment because improvement is not immediate; tell the team what you are noticing so they can interpret it alongside your scan plan. Ask which scan will be used, when it is expected, and what findings would lead to continuing, changing or pausing treatment. Bring a current list of medicines and supplements to appointments.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, a persistent fever, severe diarrhoea, marked weakness, confusion, or a new widespread rash. Immune-related inflammation can affect the lungs, bowel, liver, skin or hormone glands and may need assessment before the next infusion. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting, sudden confusion or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need attention because of their severity, not because they prove that the cancer is progressing.
