How long does immunotherapy take to work for liver cancer?

Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells, so its effect is not always felt immediately after an infusion. The timing can vary with the type and extent of liver cancer, liver function, the medicine used and whether another treatment is given alongside it.

A scan may show that disease is stable before a clear reduction is seen. Symptoms can also change for reasons unrelated to tumour response, while inflammation from treatment can sometimes make an area look different on imaging. Your oncology team compares results over time rather than relying on one symptom or one scan.

Attend infusion visits, blood tests and scans on the schedule your team gives you. Report new or worsening symptoms, but do not stop treatment or delay an appointment because you do not feel a change yet.

Before treatment, ask which scan or laboratory findings will guide the next decision. Keep a simple record of appetite, energy, pain, skin changes and bowel habits; this gives your team useful context alongside liver tests and imaging.

Contact your oncology team promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual bleeding, severe abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, marked confusion or a rapid decline in alertness. These symptoms can reflect liver problems or treatment-related inflammation and need assessment.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting or sudden severe weakness. Keep your treatment card or medication list available when you seek care.
