How long does immunotherapy take to work for kidney cancer?

Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise cancer cells. The response may develop gradually, while fatigue, pain, appetite, urine changes or weight can have several causes. Your oncology team may use scans to compare the kidneys and any other affected areas with earlier images, alongside blood tests, blood pressure, kidney function and your symptoms.

The timing is shaped by the extent of the kidney cancer, previous treatment, the immunotherapy medicine and your general health. Imaging can sometimes need careful review when inflammation is present. Your oncologist will explain what the findings mean before deciding whether the current plan should continue or change.

Attend infusions, blood tests and scan appointments, and keep notes on urine changes, pain, swelling, breathlessness, appetite, fluid intake and energy. Take prescribed medicines as directed and check before taking anti-inflammatory medicines, supplements or herbal products. Do not alter treatment because early symptoms have stayed the same. Contact your cancer team promptly for much less urine, blood in the urine, new swelling, persistent diarrhoea, a spreading rash, yellowing skin or eyes, fever, severe pain or unusual weakness. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting or inability to pass urine. These signs can have different causes, and some immune-related reactions need prompt treatment.
