How long does immunotherapy take to work for head and neck cancer?

Immunotherapy helps the immune system identify and attack cancer cells. A change in a lump, mouth or throat discomfort, swallowing, voice, cough or energy may be meaningful, but symptoms alone cannot confirm response. Your team may examine the mouth, throat, neck or skin, review nutrition and breathing, and compare scans with previous images.

Timing differs with the cancer’s location and extent, earlier treatments, the medicine used and your general health. Inflammation can sometimes make examination or imaging harder to interpret. Your oncologist will consider the findings together and explain whether continuing, adjusting or changing the plan is appropriate.

Write down changes in swallowing, speech, pain, mouth sores, cough, breathing, weight, drinking and energy. Keep treatment and scan appointments, follow the eating and drinking advice from your care team, and use prescribed mouth or pain treatments as directed. Tell the team about every new medicine or supplement. Ask what improvement they hope to see and when the next response review will occur.

Contact your cancer team promptly for worsening swallowing, inability to keep fluids down, a new or spreading rash, persistent diarrhoea, fever, severe mouth pain, yellowing skin or eyes, or marked weakness. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, choking, coughing blood, uncontrolled bleeding, chest pain or collapse. Treatment-related inflammation can affect organs away from the original cancer and needs early attention.

Ask how the tumour and nearby lymph nodes will be assessed, when your next scan or examination is planned, and which swallowing or breathing changes need urgent contact. You can also ask about nutrition support, mouth care, side-effect treatment and the next plan if the response is uncertain.
