Imiquimod encourages a local immune response against the wart tissue. Burning, redness, swelling, soreness, or surface breakdown may appear while the medicine is active. These effects can be uncomfortable, but the amount of irritation does not reliably show how quickly the warts will clear.

Response varies with the number, size, and location of lesions and with whether the diagnosis is correct. Warts may reduce gradually, and some can return after treatment. The medicine treats visible lesions; it does not remove every possibility of future lesions or replace sexual-health advice.

Ask exactly where to apply the cream, how long to leave it on, what to do after a missed dose, and when improvement should be checked. Discuss partner notification, testing for other sexually transmitted infections, contraception or barrier protection, and alternatives if irritation is difficult.
