How long does hysterectomy take to work for uterine prolapse?

Uterine prolapse happens when support tissues allow the uterus to descend into the vagina. Removing the uterus addresses that organ, but prolapse surgery may also include repair of the vaginal walls, bladder support, or rectal support. Those repairs influence what you feel and how long healing takes. Pressure or a bulge may improve early, while swelling, altered bowel or bladder habits, and fatigue settle more gradually. Hysterectomy ends menstrual periods and removes the ability to carry a pregnancy; it does not automatically remove the ovaries.

Walk gently as advised and avoid heavy lifting, straining, and activities that increase pelvic pressure until your surgeon clears them. Prevent constipation with the plan given by your care team, take prescribed medicines as directed, and keep the area clean and dry according to instructions. Ask when vaginal intercourse, tampons, driving, and work can resume. Attend follow-up even if the bulge feels better, because healing and pelvic support still need assessment.

Seek prompt medical advice for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening pelvic or abdominal pain, inability to pass urine, severe constipation, foul-smelling discharge, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or a new painful swollen leg. A small amount of spotting can occur, but increasing bleeding or a sudden return of a bulge should be reported.

Ask which prolapse compartments need repair, whether the cervix or ovaries will remain, how to protect the repair from straining, and when you can safely return to lifting, exercise, sex, driving, and work.
