How long does HPV vaccination take to work for HPV infection?

The vaccine trains the immune system to recognise selected HPV types before exposure. Protection is not an instant treatment effect, and the timing depends on the vaccination schedule and your immune response. Vaccination cannot remove HPV already in the body, heal abnormal cervical cells, or treat established genital warts. It can still be useful after sexual activity because you may not have encountered every type included in the vaccine.

Complete the schedule advised for your age and health circumstances, and tell the clinic about pregnancy, immune conditions, or a previous serious vaccine reaction. Continue cervical screening at the interval recommended for you. A vaccine dose does not require an HPV test first in every situation, so ask the clinician what applies to you. Mild soreness or tiredness can occur after an injection; follow the clinic's advice about symptom relief.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, or collapse after vaccination. Contact your clinician for persistent or worsening symptoms, or for abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, or genital lesions; vaccination does not explain away symptoms that need examination.

Ask which schedule is recommended, when the next dose is due, what protection the vaccine covers, and which screening appointments you still need. Ask how a prior HPV result or immune condition changes the plan.
