How long does an HIV test take to work for HIV infection?

Different HIV tests look for different markers, such as viral material, antigen or antibodies. Those markers become detectable at different points after exposure. A negative result soon after a possible exposure may therefore be too early to exclude infection. The testing service will tell you which test was used, when its result is reliable, and whether a follow-up sample is appropriate.

Contact a sexual-health service promptly and share the date and type of possible exposure without delay. Ask whether urgent preventive treatment is suitable; it works best when started quickly and must be prescribed.
