How long does hip resurfacing take to work for hip osteoarthritis?

Short answer
Hip resurfacing may make weight-bearing easier within the early recovery period, while swelling, strength, and comfortable function continue improving over several months.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First phase
- Walking and weight bearing often improve gradually as the wound and muscles recover.
- Functional recovery
- Endurance, strength, and comfortable daily movement can continue developing over several months.
How improvement develops
Hip resurfacing replaces the damaged joint surfaces while preserving more of the natural femoral head than a total hip replacement. Early progress is affected by the operation itself, wound discomfort, swelling, and the muscles’ response to walking. A smoother joint surface can reduce arthritic pain, but the hip still needs time to regain balance, endurance, and a normal walking pattern. Improvement is not always linear: a more active day can cause temporary aching.
Helping the hip recover
Use the walking aid and weight-bearing level recommended by your surgical team. Perform the prescribed exercises, attend follow-up appointments, and build activity gradually. Avoid crossing your legs, twisting, impact, or other movements if your surgeon has restricted them. Check the incision as advised, keep the area protected, and arrange help with tasks that require carrying or prolonged standing while mobility is limited.
When to seek care
Report increasing wound redness, fluid leakage, fever, sudden severe hip pain, a new leg-length concern, calf swelling, or breathlessness urgently. A fall, inability to put weight through the leg, or a sudden change in the hip’s function should be assessed by the surgical team.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what improvement is expected first, when to stop using a walking aid, which hip positions are restricted, how rehabilitation will be progressed, and which symptoms need urgent review.

Questions people ask
Does hip resurfacing remove all arthritis pain straight away?
No. The resurfaced joint may address the damaged surfaces, but surgical soreness and muscle weakness can temporarily remain.
Why did pain return after I became more active?
A sudden increase in walking or exercise can irritate healing tissues; reduce the load and follow the rehabilitation plan, then seek advice if it persists.
