How long does a hearing test take to work for earwax buildup?

Earwax can block the ear canal and reduce the sound reaching the eardrum. This may produce temporary hearing loss, fullness, ringing or an echoing quality. A hearing test can document how you hear, but it cannot remove the blockage or explain every ear symptom. The clinician may first look inside the ear and decide whether wax treatment should happen before, or alongside, hearing assessment.

Tell the tester about one-sided hearing change, pain, discharge, dizziness and previous ear surgery. Do not insert cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the canal, because this can push wax deeper or injure the ear. Use only wax-softening treatment recommended for you, and return for reassessment if the ear remains blocked. Testing after the canal is clear can help separate a wax-related change from another hearing problem.

Get urgent medical advice for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe ear pain, blood or discharge from the ear, or a high fever. Arrange review for persistent one-sided hearing loss or ringing. These symptoms should not be attributed to wax without an examination.

Ask whether wax needs removal before testing, which products are safe for your ears, when hearing should be checked again, and what the result means if the blockage clears. Mention any sudden or one-sided change.
