How long does hand therapy take to work for Dupuytren's contracture?

Dupuytren's contracture involves thickened tissue in the palm that can pull one or more fingers toward the palm. Therapy may help maintain available movement, improve hand use, and guide recovery after a procedure. The response depends on which finger is affected, how fixed the bend is, skin and joint flexibility, and whether the condition is changing. A therapist can measure finger position and function instead of judging progress by pain alone.

Do the prescribed stretches, exercises, and splint routine consistently, especially when a splint has been supplied after treatment. Keep the skin clean and check for pressure, rubbing, or colour change. Use the hand in ordinary tasks within the limits given to you, but do not force a resistant finger straight. Mention changes in grip, finger reach, or new palm lumps at follow-up.

Book a review if the finger is becoming more bent, hand use is declining, or the splint is painful or no longer fitting. Seek prompt care for sudden severe pain, a new injury, spreading redness, fever, marked swelling, or a finger that becomes pale, blue, cold, or numb.
