Short answer

The H. pylori breath test is completed during one visit, but the result and gastritis treatment plan may follow later.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test tells you

You breathe into a collection container, take a test substance, and provide another breath sample. The laboratory compares the samples for signs that H. pylori is breaking down the substance. A positive result supports H. pylori infection as a possible contributor to gastritis, but it does not explain every cause of stomach irritation. A negative result may need interpretation alongside symptoms and other medicines.

How to prepare

Follow the testing centre’s instructions about fasting, eating and medicines. Acid-suppressing medicines, antibiotics and some other treatments can affect the result, so tell the clinician what you take and do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Arrange how you will receive the result. If H. pylori is found, treatment usually involves a clinician-selected combination of medicines, followed by a later check when advised.

When to seek care promptly

Get urgent medical help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe or sudden abdominal pain, fainting, or persistent vomiting. Arrange medical review for worsening upper-abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms that continue despite the agreed plan. These features need assessment beyond a breath test.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which medicines need pausing, whether fasting is required, when the result should arrive, and what treatment follows a positive result. Confirm when a repeat test is useful and what symptoms should prompt earlier review.

Questions people ask

Does the breath test treat gastritis?

No. It looks for H. pylori; treatment is considered separately if infection is confirmed.

Can medicines affect the result?

Yes. Acid-suppressing medicines and antibiotics can interfere, so provide a complete medicine list and follow the centre’s instructions.
