How long does a growth scan take to work for oligohydramnios?

Ultrasound can measure the pockets of amniotic fluid, estimate your baby’s size, check movement and heartbeat, and assess the placenta. Doppler measurements may be used to look at blood flow when your clinician considers them useful. The sonographer may need extra time to obtain clear images or repeat a measurement.

Low amniotic fluid can have several explanations, and one scan is interpreted alongside your pregnancy stage, symptoms, earlier results and your baby’s wellbeing. The result may lead to repeat monitoring, additional assessment or a change in the timing and place of care.

Follow the appointment instructions from your maternity team; do not try to correct the fluid level yourself by changing fluids or activity without specific advice. At the visit, ask what fluid measurement was recorded, how your baby is growing, whether blood-flow checks were reassuring, and when you should return. Seek prompt maternity advice for fluid leaking from the vagina, vaginal bleeding, painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, fever, or reduced baby movements. A planned scan cannot replace urgent assessment when symptoms change.
