How long does a growth scan take to work for fetal growth restriction?

Ultrasound measurements estimate the baby's size and can assess fluid, movement, and blood flow when Doppler checks are included. One scan gives a snapshot; growth is better understood by comparing measurements over time, alongside your pregnancy dates and other clinical findings. A scan cannot make growth restriction improve, and a smaller measurement does not by itself explain the cause. Your maternity team uses the findings to decide how often to monitor you and whether the timing or place of birth needs discussion.

Attend the scan and bring any previous pregnancy records requested by your clinic. Ask which measurements will be checked, when the report will be reviewed, and whether another scan or Doppler assessment is planned. Continue any prescribed medicines and monitoring unless your maternity team gives different instructions. Keep track of your baby's usual movements so you can describe any change clearly. Contact your maternity unit immediately if your baby's movements are reduced or different from the pattern your team told you to expect. Do not wait for a scheduled growth scan to report this. Seek urgent help for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache with vision changes, or sudden severe abdominal pain. The maternity team may advise assessment, monitoring, or delivery planning based on the whole picture.
