How long does growth factor support take to work for febrile neutropenia?

Growth factors signal the bone marrow to produce and release more neutrophils. The timing depends on the medicine, the cause and depth of the low count, marrow reserve, recent chemotherapy, infection, and other illnesses. A blood count is used to judge the response; feeling better alone does not confirm that neutrophils have recovered. Growth factor support may be one part of care alongside tests, antibiotics, fluids, observation, and changes to a cancer treatment schedule.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and attend repeat blood tests. Check your temperature as your clinical team advises, wash your hands, and avoid close contact with people who are unwell. Do not take leftover antibiotics or fever medicine to hide a temperature unless your team has given specific instructions. Tell clinicians about chills, mouth sores, cough, urinary symptoms, or a line that is painful or red.

A fever during neutropenia is an emergency: contact your oncology service immediately and follow its instructions for urgent assessment. Go to emergency care for shaking chills, confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, or rapid deterioration. Do not wait for growth factor support to take effect.
