The clinician may ask about aching, heaviness, swelling, itching, skin colour changes and any history of clots. A consultation can identify concerns and plan care, but it does not make enlarged veins disappear on the day.

Symptoms may be more noticeable after standing for a long time. Walking regularly, changing position and raising the legs when resting may ease discomfort for some people. Compression garments should be chosen with clinical advice when circulation is uncertain.

Follow the plan given, stay active within your comfort, avoid sitting or standing still for long periods, and protect dry or itchy skin with moisturiser. Ask how to use compression safely if it has been recommended. Attend any scan or referral appointment so the cause of swelling can be clarified.

Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness or pain, especially with chest pain, breathlessness or coughing blood. Arrange review for a bleeding vein, a skin ulcer, rapidly worsening swelling or new skin colour changes. These symptoms may need prompt assessment rather than routine management of longstanding veins.
