How long does a GP consultation take to work for a transient ischaemic attack?

A TIA can cause sudden weakness or numbness, facial drooping, speech trouble, vision change, dizziness or loss of balance, with symptoms that may disappear. The disappearance does not make the event harmless or confirm the diagnosis. The same symptoms can signal a stroke, so clinicians need to assess you urgently even if you feel normal again.

Assessment may include a neurological examination, blood pressure review, heart rhythm checks and tests arranged by the medical team. Treatment depends on the findings and may address clot risk, blood pressure, heart rhythm or other causes.

If symptoms are happening now or happened recently, call emergency services and state that a stroke or TIA is suspected. Note the time symptoms began or when you were last well. Do not drive yourself. Bring a list of medicines and medical conditions if this can be done without delaying help.

Seek emergency help immediately for any new facial droop, one-sided weakness, speech difficulty, sudden vision loss, severe imbalance or confusion, even if it improves. Do not wait for a routine GP appointment or for symptoms to return. After an assessment, follow the discharge plan and return urgently if symptoms recur.
