How long does a GP consultation take to work for threadworms?

The clinician may ask about night-time itching around the anus, sleep disruption and whether other people at home have similar symptoms. They may recommend an anti-worm medicine or explain how to obtain suitable treatment. The consultation itself is an assessment, so it does not make the worms disappear immediately.

Itching can continue for a while after treatment because irritated skin needs to settle. Reinfection is common when eggs remain on fingers, bedding, towels or clothing, so everyone who needs treatment and the household cleaning plan matter.

Follow the clinician’s directions for the medicine and any repeat dose. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before eating, keep fingernails short, avoid scratching, and wash sleepwear, towels and bedding regularly. Do not share towels. Ask whether other household members should be treated, especially children or anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.

Arrange another medical review if itching continues after the recommended treatment plan, returns repeatedly, or causes broken skin or infection. Seek prompt advice for severe abdominal pain, vomiting, marked weakness or symptoms in a very young child. A pharmacist or GP can help if you are unsure which product is appropriate.
