How long does a GP consultation take to work for a stye?

A stye is a tender lump near an eyelash or within an eyelid gland. The GP checks whether it is a stye, a blocked gland or another eyelid problem, and looks for signs that infection has moved beyond the local bump.

Most uncomplicated styes are managed with local care. They can remain sore while they drain or shrink, and a small firm lump may linger after the tenderness has eased.

Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time, repeating it through the day. Wash your hands before touching the eye and keep the eyelid clean.

Do not squeeze or pierce the stye. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid has recovered, and use drops or ointment only when recommended for your eye.

Get urgent care for vision changes, pain when moving the eye, severe swelling around the eye, fever, or redness spreading across the cheek.

Arrange another review if the lump keeps enlarging, repeatedly returns, fails to improve with the advised care, or affects your vision. A clinician may consider a different treatment or specialist assessment.
