How long does a GP consultation take to work for strep throat?

The clinician will consider your sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands and throat appearance. They may discuss testing, antibiotics, pain relief and fluids. Antibiotics help only when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed; they do not provide instant relief.

Throat pain and fever can continue after treatment starts. The throat may feel worse when swallowing, so improvement is better judged across the next day or two rather than after one dose.

Take any prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the planned course unless your clinician changes it. Drink regularly, choose soft foods, rest, and use suitable pain relief only as advised for you.

Avoid sharing cups, utensils or toothbrushes while infection is suspected. Wash your hands and ask when it is safe to return to school or work.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, severe dehydration, rapidly increasing neck swelling, confusion or marked drowsiness.

Contact the GP again if symptoms are not starting to improve after the advised interval, if they worsen, or if a medicine causes a concerning reaction such as facial swelling or wheezing.

Ask whether the findings suggest strep throat, whether testing is needed, when improvement should be expected, and what to do if swallowing becomes harder.
