How long does a GP consultation take to work for postural hypotension?

Postural hypotension means blood pressure falls when you move upright, which can cause light-headedness, blurred vision, weakness or fainting. The clinician may measure blood pressure while lying or sitting and again after standing. They may review dehydration, recent illness, heart problems, nervous-system conditions and medicines that can lower blood pressure.

The consultation itself does not permanently remove dizziness. Management may involve changing a contributing medicine, treating dehydration or another condition, and using practical measures suited to your health. Do not change prescribed medicines or increase salt or fluids without individual advice.

Rise slowly from bed or a chair and pause before walking. Sit or lie down as soon as you feel faint, keep a record of triggers and symptoms, and use support on stairs. Follow the clinician’s instructions about fluids, compression garments or medicine. Take your medication list and any home blood-pressure readings to review.

Seek urgent help after a fall with injury, loss of consciousness that does not quickly resolve, chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness, confusion or a racing or irregular heartbeat. Repeated fainting also needs prompt medical review.

Ask what may be causing the blood-pressure drop, whether any medicine needs review, how to stand safely, and which readings or symptoms should trigger contact. Ask when your blood pressure and treatment plan should be checked again.
