How long does a GP consultation take to work for pancreatitis?

The clinician will ask about upper abdominal pain, whether it spreads to the back, vomiting, fever and how quickly symptoms developed. They may examine your abdomen and arrange blood tests or hospital assessment. A consultation cannot settle inflammation of the pancreas instantly; the next step depends on the examination and how unwell you are.

Pancreatitis can become serious, particularly when pain is severe or persistent and drinking is difficult. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or very unwell. Bring a list of medicines and mention alcohol use, gallstones, previous episodes and recent procedures if relevant.

Follow the clinician’s direction about emergency assessment or referral. While waiting for transport or advice, avoid alcohol and do not take extra pain medicine unless a clinician has said it is suitable. Take small sips of fluid only if you can keep them down, and tell the service if vomiting or pain increases.

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, a swollen abdomen, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or inability to drink. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine review.
