How long does a GP consultation take to work for haemorrhoids?

The GP may ask about bleeding, pain, itching, a lump, bowel habits and straining. They may examine the area to distinguish haemorrhoids from other causes of anal or rectal symptoms. Advice can include keeping stools soft, increasing fibre gradually, drinking enough fluid and avoiding prolonged straining on the toilet. A cream, ointment, suppository or laxative may be recommended when appropriate. Persistent or unclear bleeding may need further assessment.

Follow the treatment instructions and keep the area gently clean and dry. Do not delay going to the toilet, and try not to sit for long periods while trying to pass stool. A warm bath may soothe discomfort. Ask a pharmacist or GP before using a product if you are pregnant, take blood-thinning medicine, or have repeated bleeding. Arrange review if symptoms are not settling or keep returning.

Seek urgent help for heavy or continuous rectal bleeding, black stools, dizziness, fainting, severe pain, fever or a rapidly worsening painful lump. Prompt GP review is appropriate for unexplained bleeding, a change in bowel habit, weight loss or symptoms that do not improve.
