How long does GP consultation take to work for gout?

Gout is caused by urate crystal inflammation in and around a joint. A GP may assess the pattern of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness, review medicines and health conditions, and decide whether tests or referral are needed. Treatment for an acute attack is different from long-term urate management. The consultation can clarify that distinction, but the joint may remain painful while inflammation settles, and preventive treatment may need monitoring and adjustment.

Follow the prescribed instructions and ask what to do if pain is not easing. Record the affected joint, start of the attack, possible triggers and medicines taken. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised a fluid restriction, and avoid changing long-term medicine without guidance. Keep follow-up appointments so the plan can address attacks as well as the urate level and other health factors. Do not take someone else’s anti-inflammatory medicine.

Contact the GP if an attack is not improving as expected, keeps returning, or treatment causes troublesome effects. Seek urgent medical care for fever with a hot swollen joint, feeling very unwell, rapidly spreading redness, or severe pain with inability to move or bear weight, because an infection can resemble gout and needs prompt treatment.
