How long does a GP consultation take to work for gastroenteritis?

The GP will ask when symptoms began, how often you are being sick or passing loose stools, whether you can drink, and whether anyone else is unwell. They may assess signs of dehydration, your abdomen, and any fever. Most care focuses on replacing fluids and salts, while testing or other treatment may be considered for particular symptoms or people at higher risk.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially after vomiting or diarrhoea. Eat small, plain meals when you feel able and rest. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Follow medicine advice from the GP, and mention recent travel, unusual food, new medicines, or blood in the stool because these details can change the assessment.

Seek urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, feel faint or confused, have severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or become unusually drowsy. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions may need earlier review if fluid loss is developing.

Ask how much fluid to take, which drinks or medicines to avoid, when you can return to work or school, and what improvement should look like. Check when to arrange review if diarrhoea or vomiting continues.
