How long does a GP consultation take to work for a foreign body in the eye?

The GP may ask how the material entered the eye, examine the eye under good light, and check vision. A loose particle may be removed or rinsed away during the visit. If the material is embedded, the eye is scratched, or metal or chemicals are involved, you may need same-day assessment by an eye specialist or emergency service. Even after removal, watering, gritty discomfort, and redness can continue while the surface recovers.

Do not rub or press the eye, and do not try to lift out an object that appears stuck. Wash your hands, remove contact lenses, and allow tears to flow. If dust is loose, gentle rinsing with clean lukewarm water may help. Avoid eye drops that numb the eye unless prescribed. Tell the GP about the material, the time of exposure, and any change in vision.

Seek urgent help for reduced or blurred vision, severe pain, marked light sensitivity, blood, a visible embedded object, or an injury from grinding, drilling, or a chemical splash. Rinse a chemical exposure continuously with clean water while arranging emergency care. Do not delay if symptoms are worsening or do not begin to ease after the material has been removed.
