Short answer

A GP consultation can provide assessment and supportive treatment for food poisoning during the appointment, but recovery may take longer as the illness settles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the consultation can change

The GP will ask when vomiting or diarrhoea began, what you ate, whether others are ill, and whether you can keep fluids down. They may assess dehydration, abdominal tenderness, fever and other warning signs. Advice commonly focuses on fluids, rest and food as tolerated; medicine is chosen cautiously because some causes need different care. Persistent symptoms can lead to testing or referral.

Care while you recover

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, and return gradually to light foods when able. Wash hands carefully, avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and follow any medicine instructions. Tell the GP about recent travel, antibiotics, pregnancy, long-term illness and reduced urination. Keep a note of fluids, vomiting, stools and temperature if symptoms continue.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent assessment for inability to keep fluids down, very little or dark urine, faintness, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or worsening weakness. Get medical advice promptly for a high fever, symptoms after travel, illness in an older or medically vulnerable person, or diarrhoea that is not improving. Emergency symptoms should not wait for a routine appointment.

Questions for your GP

Ask how much fluid to take, whether oral rehydration is suitable, which foods and medicines to avoid, and what improvement should look like. Check whether testing is needed, how to reduce spread at home, and exactly when to seek urgent care.

Questions people ask

Will a GP consultation stop food poisoning immediately?

It can identify dehydration or complications and provide a care plan, but the illness itself may need time to settle.

Should I take anti-diarrhoea medicine?

Ask a clinician or pharmacist first, especially if you have fever, blood in the stool, severe pain or another medical condition.
