How long does a GP consultation take to work for diverticular disease?

The GP may ask about abdominal pain, bowel habit, bloating, fever, nausea, vomiting, and blood in the stool. They may examine the abdomen and consider tests or referral if symptoms suggest inflammation, bleeding, another bowel problem, or a complication. Diverticulosis can cause no symptoms, while diverticulitis describes inflammation and may need more urgent management.

The appointment does not instantly change the pockets in the bowel. It helps identify whether symptoms fit uncomplicated disease or require investigation and treatment. Improvement may follow dietary advice, symptom management, or treatment for inflammation, but persistent or recurrent symptoms deserve review rather than repeated self-treatment.

Follow the eating, drinking, and medicine advice given for your symptoms, and keep a short record of pain location, bowel movements, fever, vomiting, and bleeding. Do not take leftover antibiotics or bowel medicines without advice. Ask when to arrange follow-up, especially if pain continues, bowel habits remain changed, or symptoms return after settling.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or markedly swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, fever with shaking chills, fainting, or confusion. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down or feel rapidly more unwell. These features can indicate inflammation, obstruction, bleeding, or another acute abdominal problem.

Ask whether symptoms suggest diverticulosis or diverticulitis, whether tests are needed, what foods and medicines are suitable now, and which changes need same-day care.
